I was so excited to learn that Lily Brett had , at last ,written another book. And not without justification.  Brett’s writing is everything we could hope for in these troubled times.  She does not ignore saliant issues but in her observant way, puts them into context with lashings of humour.

In this disarming, intimate and self- deprecating collection about aging, Brett gives us snapshots of. her life in New York 

The early part of her book is filled with perfectly ordinary short stories, but you can bet your life that each one will raise a laugh.  Later (and when she is 72 and feeling slightly older,) her hated Trump comes to power just as COVID appears on the scene and even these horrors are written about in a clever way that. raises a smile

After waving enthusiastically to a tall, grey-haired woman she has mistaken for her husband and avoiding a large dog that turns out to be a fire hydrant, Lily has to concede that her ophthalmologist is right- she does need cataract surgery. While at a cafe with her husband she's transfixed by a speed-dating dinner in progress at the other end of the cafe. She moves closer and watches. The event manager tells her they also have speed-dating dinners for seniors. In the crowded Apple store, in Soho, two young Apple assistants decide it will take both of them to help her.
