Alchemyst
Alchemyst
Lindsay's Review
A gripping magical mission to save the world from ancient forces is a page-turner, cross between Susan Cooper’s “Dark Is Rising” and “Harry Potter”. This world saving magical series centres around teenage twins, boy and girl, who find themselves unwittingly drawn into a magical war between forces of ancient dark ones, seeking to return the earth to a period of darkness like the dawn of time, and the benevolent ancient beings who seek to protect humanity and to share the planet.
With some central characters who are immortal, the book romps through the present-day world of cell phones and technology, while interacting with the enveloping unseen mystical world. With characters being present in all times past, many historical moments and mythological characters are included in the story. The system of magic, based around the strength of a person's aura', is surprisingly believable, and ironically reminiscent of Paul Coelho’s investigation of personal power in the like named “The Alchemist”, so popular in the 1990’s. The books clear writing makes for a timeless literary tale.
* recommended for children/teenagers and the young at heart.
