Darci's Review

Daughter of Chaos is a beautifully written re-imagining of ancient Greek mythology. I was obsessed with such tales in my childhood, and reading A. S. Webb’s debut literary fantasy has inspired me to return to this obsession. Webb has brilliantly woven Greek mythology into her fictional storyline to show the reach of the twelve main Olympians’ legacies from Naxos to Athens and Delphi, all the way across the Black Sea to the Caucasus Mountains in Colchis. This world-building would not be complete without the many famous and infamous heroes from classical Greek mythology: Heracles, Jason and the Argonauts, Ariadne, the Maenads, and the Hunters of Artemis, along with the main protagonist Danae, a young woman from Naxos with a fierce spirit and undying loyalty to her family.

Following Danae from her small village in Naxos, Daughter of Chaos explores a unique perspective on the Greek gods and their legacies. Danae is used to reveal the corruption of the powerful Greek gods and thus to question their will, in itself an act of blasphemy. Leaving Naxos behind to save herself from the accusations of demonic possession, and the supposed curse afflicting her, Danae stows away to Athens in search of the oracle at Delphi. This sets in motion a series of unexpected events that leads her to fullfil a mysterious ancient prophecy. Forming connections with the heroes of tales she was told as a young village girl, she also discovers the sacrifices demanded by those who acquire great power.

Webb’s prose style imitates that of the Greek classics, creating a philosophically profound and emotionally powerful read. Daughter of Chaos is bound to become a modern classic. Highly recommended. Pre-order your copy now!
