Immortal Dark
Immortal Dark
Darci's Review
Within this dark young-adult vampire fantasy is a unique story brimming with African-inspired myths and culture, and intricate world-building. The Immortal Dark is a stunning new fantasy which presents a creative history of vampires and the societies that control them.
Girma begins the tale from Kidan Adane’s point-of-view. After Kidan’s sister is kidnapped and all evidence points to a vampire culprit, Kidan follows the trail to Uxlay University – a secret society which supports dranaic (vampire) and acti (human) relationships. Unfortunately for her, the Adane family is highly regarded in this society, and as such, the dean tells her she needs to assume her family’s legacy if she wants to stay at Uxlay. For the sake of her sister, Kidan must withhold her violent hatred for vampires, but as further mysteries start to unravel, she begins to realise how daunting the task will be. While fighting against Susenyos, the Adane family’s legacy vampire and her most likely suspect, the truth behind Uxlay’s political landscape unfolds. Forging an unlikely alliance with Susenyos, Kidan must make sense of the true mystery surrounding the Legacy Families of Uxlay, while fighting the unrelenting tension growing between herself and the vampire she hates the most.
Throughout The Immortal Dark, I was enraptured by the detail woven through the plot and world-building. The cutthroat political landscape pushes the story further, with corruption and death lurking around every corner of Uxlay campus. As tension builds, the psyche of each character grips you, forming an understanding of why and how these characters came to navigate the dangerous family politics that plague each Legacy family, as well as the fragile boundaries of every campus interaction. With the addition of a true enemies-to-lovers arc, The Immortal Dark lives up to its reputation as a captivating read full of passionate hatred and longing in the young adult, dark academia sub-genre. This is my favorite young adult fantasy of the year.
