Sam's Review

England, 1930 something. Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong are best friends at Deepdean School For Girls. When Daisy decides to establish The Wells & Wong Detective Society, their first challenge is to find anything worth investigating. That is until Hazel discovers the body of one of their teachers. Now they have not just a mystery to solve but a murder. The fact that the body disappears within minutes of Hazel finding it makes the case even harder to crack - how do you solve a murder when there's no evidence it happened?

With the setting of an English boarding school, the time period of the 1930s and a murder mystery to solve, Murder Most Unladylike has obvious echoes of Agatha Christie and lives up to the comparison. The pace cracks along; the red herrings, twists and turns keep coming, and the murderer's confession drew a gasp from many of the fans I've met. Hazel, who narrates the story, does so as a Chinese girl from Hong Kong, giving the perspective of the outsider looking in on the odd ways of the English upper class. While Daisy may at times come across as the bossy head-girl type, her friendship with Hazel gives the book it's heart. A great introduction to a series that grows with the heroines, deftly weaving in social issues without ever losing the fun that keeps you coming back for more.

Publisher's Review

A super-special 10th anniversary edition of the first gripping, award-winning mystery starring schoolgirl detectives, Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong. With a new introduction from the author and new bonus content!

When Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong set up their very own secret detective agency at Deepdean School for Girls, they struggle to find any truly exciting mysteries to investigate. (Unless you count the case of Lavinia's missing tie. Which they don't.)

Then Hazel discovers the Science Mistress, Miss Bell, lying dead in the Gym. She assumes it was a terrible accident - but when she and Daisy return five minutes later, the body has disappeared. Now Hazel and Daisy not only have a murder to solve- they have to prove one happened in the first place.
