A young boy Peter finds a fox kit after the loss of his mother and raises it as his own, only later to be torn apart after years of companionship. With pain and longing in his heart, Peter goes out in search of his fox while Pax (the fox) discovers his true nature. 

Through the quest for reunion, Sara Pennypacker incorporates and accurately illustrates the bond between a boy and his pet that many have felt, and verses the reader in life lessons and seldom told truths; things that all growing kids should learn as they progress through life.
