'The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.' – Sir Walter Scott
Rebecca Robinson’s debut fantasy, The Serpent and the Wolf, is an astonishing read, emulating the infamous quote by Sir Walter Scott. Featuring a war between empires, a captivating romance, and larger-than-life characters, this novel is bound to become a fan favourite.
Robinson subtly entwines the two themes of rebirth and heritage by creating an enticing political sub-plot and a slow-burn romance. Vaasa, the protagonist, is a dangerous woman. Forged into a political, seductive, and intelligent weapon, Vaasa becomes the female version of her father in the hope of survival. After the death of her father, and then the death of her mother, Vaasa is shipped off to marry Reid, the Wolf of Mireh and council man of the neighbouring continent. In these uncertain times, Vaasa must learn to take control of her newfound magic before her villainous brother Dominik demands her life, instead of the insurrection she was sent to instate. As Vaasa settles into her married life, she finds many friends among those she originally deemed her enemies, and she discovers that she need not endure the weight of life on her own. Maybe her old life of the struggle to survive is no longer needed because of these new people, if she were to just let them in. Robinson implores the reader to question whether Vanessa is really the serpent and Reid the Wolf - or are there some hidden, complex meanings to this motif?
The Serpent and the Wolf is a riveting read, perfect for fans of Danielle Jensen's The Bridge Kingdom series and Shelby Mahurin's Serpent and Dove trilogy. It will be available on 1st January, and is a great holiday read to start the new year. Highly recommended.
