In the Australian bushland some 60-70,000 years ago, you and your party are in desperate need of food. As you walk, your senses wander and daydream across the landscape, but suddenly you hyper-focus on something that catches your eye. The accountants at the back of your party are occupied counting shells and don't notice. However, your intense focus allows you to spot and successfully hunt an animal hidden in the bushes. Thanks to your success, your people are able to eat that night, and the genetic mutation you carry that aids in your survival is passed on to future generations: natural selection in action.

While reading this book, I was reminded of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, which delves into the Cognitive Revolution for humans some 70,000 years ago. Hansen's book concentrates on a small part of this which is the genetic mutation - the DRD4-7R gene - that originated in humans some 70,000 years ago. This mutation is today one of the most ubiquitous in human history and is commonly found in but not limited to entrepreneurs, research scientists, geologists, explorers and high-achieving individuals across all fields. The gene’s influence on human behaviour and thought is profound and at the centre of what this book is about - ADHD.

Hansen’s book initially provides an in-depth examination of ADHD and its many components, addressing the diagnostic challenges due to the variation in symptoms among individuals who may not fit its strict criteria. Beginning with a review of the past 300 years, it deals with early observations made by physicians and others, covering some early misunderstandings with ADHD - such as attributing it to brain damage – through to current medical research on dopamine impacts, and its relative prevalence among boys and girls.

Hansen then takes you further along the fascinating journey of the ADHD: DRD4-7R gene, tracing it from ancient times with hunter-gatherers to modern-day explorers around the world. He explores the surprising relationship between ADHD and political views, highlighting the tendency for those with ADHD to lean towards small-l liberal ideologies. Moreover, he uncovers how individuals with this gene possess a trait known as "functional impulsivity," allowing them to make calculated risks while under pressure, and which can be advantageous for entrepreneurs and other high achievers. As well, Hansen considers the connection between ADHD and creativity, identifying traits shared by famous creatives such as Mozart, Poe, Dali and Edison.

As Hansen puts it, ADHD is a “coin with two sides.” However, society has focused solely on the idea that ADHD is a problem or deficiency, while disregarding its evolutionary history, potential benefits and strengths. This informative book moves the conversation not only towards an acceptance of ADHD but also to affirming its many advantages for both individuals and society in the modern world.

Highly recommended.
