The Bone Season is an enthralling first instalment in the Bone Season series. You are introduced to the dystopian society of the Scion, a government in Great Britain dedicated to eradicating Clairvoyants. These Clairvoyants have the ability to use the aether to perform magical acts such as seeing the future or walking around in a metaphysical form. Samantha Shannon was ahead of her time with this series, delving into a volatile political landscape that encourages us to reflect on the injustices of genocide and the ramifications of systemic corruption. Through the eyes of Paige Mahoney, we get to experience the clairvoyants’ only escape from demise – the crime organisation known as the Syndicate. Shannon uses her impeccable skills in world-building and characterisation to take you on a journey through the heart of the Scion Citadel. One of my favourite fantasy/sci-fi series of all time, a definite 5 out of 5 stars from me.
"Welcome to Scion. No safer place.
The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe.
In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing. When Paige is arrested for murder, she meets the mysterious founders of Scion, who have designs on her uncommon abilities. If she is to survive and escape, Paige must use every skill at her disposal and put her trust in someone who ought to be her enemy."
