An extraordinary, inspiring and hope-filled graphic novel from Trace Balla, the multi-award-winning creator of Rivertime, Rockhopping, Landing with Wings and Leaf-light.
Anya's Review
Trace Balla has been a wonderful Australian children’s author and illustrator to watch and savour since Rivertime was published in 2014. Both Rivertime and her next book, Rockhopping, are intricately drawn picture books that follow 10-year-old Clancy’s adventures in nature with Uncle Egg. These were followed by Landing with Wings and Leaf-light, stand-alone adventures of a young naturalist called Mira. Balla is a visual storyteller, and these magical books are that rare thing, picture books for older children (ages 8-12). Indeed, they’re so full of images, detail, and information about the natural world that should probably be called graphic novels.
Whilst Balla is Victorian and the stories are set in the Eastern States, the overarching themes are relevant for all outdoorsy kids: adventure, love of country, family and deep care for the environment. Balla’s new book, Treeshape, is more personal, as well as suitable for all ages. It explores her awakening to the beauty of nature and a lifelong relationship with the environment, from a child to the mother of an adult son. It showcases the author’s many creative talents as an artist, writer and activist, as well as her deeply humanist vision. This new book by a multiple-award winning writer is an inspiring gift to readers, encouraging us to follow our hearts while staying grounded. All lovingly wrapped in a spirit of generosity and gratitude for the wonder of the natural world.
